Super Gut Yogurt for SIBO

The boys were playing with their remote-controlled car in our front yard when my neighbor passed by.  She lives down the street from me and made meals for us when Mara was sick. My family moved to a house in the country, then stayed another three years after Mara died. I hadn’t talked to her since we moved back to the city, and so she pulled over for chat.

Turns out she has gut issues.  Significant gut issues. So, I told her about our supplements and how BrocElite especially helps with gut issues. I told her of how a GI doctor in Texas who uses them for his patients has seen near miraculous recoveries of folks whose guts were really bad.

I also told her about a book called Super Gut by William Davis and how my oldest son is making this yogurt described in the book that is meant to really help people with SIBO, or small intestine bacterial overgrowth.

Gut bacteria is meant to mainly be in the colon or large intestine. SIBO occurs when there is an increase in the overall bacterial population in the small intestine, specifically with species of bacteria not typically found in the small intestine.

One of the main causes of SIBO is a slowing in the food that travels through the intestines, called Migrating Motor Complex. Food poisoning is one cause of this. Additionally, a structural change in the small intestine from things like twists, kinks, compressions, or tumors can change and lead to SIBO. Another common cause is immune issues, where the body cannot kill and remove this bad bacteria from the small intestine.

Regardless of the cause, the symptoms are clear: loss of appetite, stomach pain, nausea, bloating, weight loss, and diarrhea.

The yogurt in the book, called Super Gut SIBO Yogurt, is designed to eradicate SIBO. Unlike conventional commercial yogurt, whose bacterial species are not chosen to benefit gut health, the Super Gut Yogurt has three species specifically chosen to address SIBO.

The most interesting of the three species is Lactobacillus gasseri which colonizes the upper GI tract and can form a biofilm, which is like “cities” of bacteria that are covered with an extracellular matrix. This bacteria is best known for its ability to decrease bone loss in post-menopausal women and decrease body weight and white adipose tissue (fat).

This yogurt is also different because it has 500 billion colony-forming units per 4 oz compared to 30-100 million colony-forming units with commercial yogurt.

Super Gut Yogurt is easy to make yourself. You place 64 oz of organic half-and-half, 2 Tbs of potato starch, 2 Tbs of inulin, and some yogurt starter. Incubate at 109ºF for 36 hours. One good option for an incubator is this one from Brod & Taylor.

If you are following the Super Gut four-week protocol, which calls for berberine, try out BerbElite, which is currently on sale.

If you are in Charlottesville, my oldest son has started selling the Super Gut Yogurt locally. Leave a message in this blog and I’ll connect you!

Specifically what “yogurt starter” are you talking about using and how much please??

Is the 1/2 and 1/2 used in your son’s recipe organic? If so, I may be interested, depending on the cost and how I would access it. I would like to know more. Thank you. This is a private inquiry, not a public comment, so please do not post.

Hello, I have a very serious case of SIBO and have had it for 8 years and have never been able to take a probiotic or yogurt. I would be very interested in trying this. Could you be more specific on brand of ingredients and would your son ever consider shipping? I do take Berbelite from time to time but had no idea it helped to address SIBO. Thank you
