SleepElite supplies the serotonin and melatonin precursors your body uses to make its own melatonin, rather than delivering the finished hormone. The formula combines 5-HTP, L-tryptophan, vitamin B6 as P5P, ashwagandha, berberine, TMG, and Broccoli Seed Complex.
Key Takeaways
- ✓SleepElite contains no melatonin
- ✓Your body builds melatonin from tryptophan
- ✓Vitamin B6 drives the conversion step
- ✓Two capsules, 30 to 60 minutes before bed
- ✓Check with your doctor about serotonin medications
Most sleep supplements contain the hormone melatonin, giving your body directly what it can make on its own. SleepElite takes the upstream route by giving you the ingredients.
The formula supports sleep quality, relaxation, mood, and a healthy sleep cycle by supplying what your body builds melatonin from, plus ingredients that support a calmer pre-sleep state.
How does your body make its own melatonin?
Melatonin is made in the body through a four-step pathway that begins with an amino acid already in your diet.
Tryptophan is converted to 5-hydroxytryptophan, better known as 5-HTP. 5-HTP converts to serotonin. Serotonin is then acetylated and methylated to produce melatonin.
The second step is catalyzed by an enzyme called aromatic L-amino acid decarboxylase, and that enzyme requires pyridoxal phosphate, the active form of vitamin B6, as its cofactor. [1] [2]
That is why SleepElite includes vitamin B6 as P5P rather than as standard pyridoxine. P5P is the form the enzyme uses.
Why it matters: Serotonin does double duty here. It supports mood and stress response during the day, and it supplies the raw material for melatonin production at night.
Why doesn't SleepElite contain melatonin?
We left melatonin out on purpose because most doses overshoot what your body produces on its own, and the research shows that more is not better.
Normal nighttime melatonin in the bloodstream runs roughly 60 to 200 picograms per milliliter. [3]
A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover trial using polysomnography compared placebo against 0.1 mg, 0.3 mg, and 3.0 mg of melatonin in adults over 50. The results:
- 3.0 mg produced a median peak of 1,370 picograms per milliliter, roughly seven times the top of the normal nighttime range, and levels stayed elevated into the next day. [3]
- 0.3 mg produced a median peak of 220 picograms per milliliter and returned to baseline within ten hours. [3]
- 0.3 mg improved sleep efficiency more than 3.0 mg did, and the larger dose measurably reduced core body temperature, whereas the smaller one did not. [3]
The smallest effective dose in that trial outperformed a dose ten times larger.
Why it matters: Consistent high-dose supplementation can downregulate or desensitize the brain's melatonin receptors. Over time, this decreases sensitivity to both synthetic melatonin and the body's natural nighttime surge. Supporting your own production works with the system you already have. SleepElite gives the pathway its inputs and lets your body set the amount.

Per two-capsule serving. 60 vegan capsules, 30 servings. Two capsules in the evening, 30 to 60 minutes before bed.
- 5-HTP, 50 mg, and L-tryptophan, 50 mg. Serotonin precursors, one step apart on the pathway. L-tryptophan crosses into the brain first, a step upstream of 5-HTP.
- Vitamin B6 as P5P, 25 mg. The active cofactor for the conversion of 5-HTP to serotonin.
- Ashwagandha, 100 mg. Included for stress and sleep support, and a calmer pre-sleep state.
- Berberine, 150 mg. Included by Mara Labs as part of the sleep and stress formula.
- Betaine, TMG, 50 mg. Supports methylation, the chemistry behind neurotransmitter turnover.
- Broccoli Seed Complex, 150 mg. Mara Labs' proprietary complex, included to support cellular availability of the formula's ingredients.
No melatonin. No fillers. Vegan capsules. Sixty capsules per bottle, thirty servings.
Why it matters: Each ingredient has a defined job. The formula supplies the pathway rather than stacking sedatives.
How do you take SleepElite?
Two capsules in the evening, 30 to 60 minutes before bed.
Taking it consistently matters more than taking it at the exact right time. The pathway responds to steady input, so a regular bedtime routine does more than an occasional dose.
For people new to supplements, or anyone whose system runs sensitive, start slowly and take the capsules with water and a bit of food.
Why it matters: The window before bed is when your body is already shifting toward melatonin production. Timing the dose to that shift works with your own rhythm.
What should you know before starting?
Three things to know about starting SleepElite, and the first one applies to a lot of people.
Important medical note: If you take any medication that affects serotonin, talk with your doctor before taking a product containing 5-HTP or L-tryptophan.
The same applies during pregnancy, while nursing, or when managing a diagnosed condition.
Berberine may interact with some medications, including blood pressure, liver, and sedative medications. Ashwagandha may also interact with sedatives.
Your physician can tell you how these fit with what you already take.
Why it matters: SleepElite works on the serotonin pathway, and so do several common prescriptions. That overlap is worth a conversation before you start, not after.
Frequently asked questions
Does SleepElite contain melatonin?
No. SleepElite supplies serotonin and melatonin precursors, including 5-HTP, L-tryptophan, and vitamin B6 as P5P, so your body can produce melatonin through its own pathway. The formula contains no melatonin and no synthetic hormones.
Why would a sleep supplement leave melatonin out?
Common supplemental doses exceed what the body produces on its own. Normal nighttime melatonin runs roughly 60 to 200 picograms per milliliter, while a 3 mg dose produced a median peak of 1,370 in a controlled trial, with levels still elevated the following day. In that same trial, a 0.3 mg dose improved sleep efficiency more than 3 mg did.
How does the body make melatonin?
Through four enzymatic steps starting from tryptophan, which becomes 5-HTP, then serotonin, then melatonin. The conversion of 5-HTP to serotonin runs on aromatic L-amino acid decarboxylase, which requires pyridoxal phosphate, the active form of vitamin B6, as its cofactor.
When should I take SleepElite?
Two capsules in the evening, 30 to 60 minutes before bed. Consistency matters more than exact timing, so pair it with a regular bedtime routine.
Can I take SleepElite with my current medications?
Talk with your doctor first, particularly if you take any medication affecting serotonin, since the formula contains 5-HTP and L-tryptophan. Berberine may interact with blood pressure, liver, and sedative medications, and ashwagandha may interact with sedatives. The same caution applies during pregnancy and while nursing.
